Sariyer

Sarıyer is the most northern district of Istanbul layingon the European side of the city. District looks really beautiful with a long coastline and rich forest. The Sarıyer district covers big area including several villages on the European side of the Bosporus  going from Rumelifeneri, through Tarabya, Yeniköy, İstinye, Emirgan and ending in Rumelihisarı. Sarıyer’s neighbouring districts are Eyüp district on the northwest, Beşiktaş districton the south and Şişli district on the west. Sarıyer has approximately 260,000 inhabitants.

RUMELI KAVAGI

Rumeli Kavagi is the most northern dock on the European side of the Bosporus  It is located opposite to Anadolu Kavagi that is on the Asian side. This pretty area is a popular location for enjoying fresh fish in one of numerous seafood or fish restaurants or  just for relaxing on the beach. Rumeli Kavağı is not hard to find. Daily sightseeing tour in Bosporus will count this place on the list. The ferry will stop for about 3 hours- enabling you to go to this small town and watch the sea peacefully from local restaurants. You will also notice some fishermen with their catch- an unusual scene in your daily life.

RUMELI FENERI

Rumeli Feneri is one of the historical lighthouses that have not lost its importance up till today. Rumeli Feneri is positioned in the European region of the Black Sea way in. Rumeli stands for the name that was previously used for the lands of Turkish that set in Europe. It stands across from Anadolu lighthouse that settles on the Asian part of the bay and is distanced 3.7 km.

These two of the lighthouses are connected with a line that is a sign of border of Istanbul Port. Today the Rumeli feneri is used as the village for fishermen in Sariyer.

Frenchmen built lighthouse to make available the safe navigation for both of the French as well as British war ships that enter the Istanbul port from the region of Black Sea for the period of the Crimean War in 19th century. The lighthouse in concert to its corresponding part started working in May 1856.

The takeover began with the cancelation of a big event held by the French due to the invasion of Turkish soldiers. The Ministry which is known as Transport and Communication ministry operates it today.

The lighthouse is 30 m high. Because of its height, it is one of the tallest lighthouses established in Turkey. It is painted in white, and is situated 58 m above the sea at the side of the hill. The first light was with kerosene and later on replaced by the acetylene gas. Nowadays it runs on electricity, however, the backup option comes from lightening of butane gas. The lighthouse uses the technology from Fresnel lens (of 500 mm focal length) making the lighthouse flashes out white light for the interval of each 12 seconds in 33 km range.
